General Settings
Connection status
At the top of the General section, you'll see your current connection status — whether you're connected to the Kognar backend and authenticated.
Default models
Set the models that are pre-selected when you start new conversations or use AI features.

| Chat model | Default model for text conversations |
| Image generation model | Default model for generating images |
| Image editing model | Default model for editing existing images |
Click the dropdown next to each option to browse and select from available models.
Preferences
| Preference | Description |
|---|---|
| Save history | When enabled, conversations are saved to your local database. When disabled, conversations are not persisted after the session ends. |
| Cache user interface | Caches the UI for faster startup times. |
| Context by folder | When enabled, the AI uses folder-level instructions and semantic context when generating responses. |
| Play sounds | Plays a notification sound when the assistant finishes a response. Also plays a startup sound when the app loads. |

View disk usage
See how much space is used by:
- Conversations and message history
- Cache files
- Application logs
Export backup
Download a complete backup of your data as a compressed file (.msgpack.gz). The backup includes:
- All conversations and messages
- Folder structure and folder instructions
- Conversation-to-folder assignments
To export: Click Export backup → the file is saved to your Downloads folder.
Filename format: kognar-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.msgpack.gz
Import backup
Restore data from a previous backup.
- Click Import backup
- Select a
.msgpack.gzfile (or a legacy.jsonbackup) - Confirm the import
Importing a backup overwrites your current folder data and assignments. It does not delete existing conversations — it merges.
Clear cache
Deletes the local search index and rebuilds it. Useful if search results seem incorrect or stale.
Reset application
This is irreversible. Resetting the application permanently deletes:
- All conversation history
- All settings and preferences
- All folders and their instructions
- All custom agents and rules
- All cached data
Only use this if you want to start completely fresh.
A confirmation dialog appears before the reset is executed.
Logout
At the bottom of the General section, click Logout to sign out of your account and return to the login screen.
